Domain Names
Q) What is a domain name?
A) It's the unique name associated with your website. For example, "vicorsys.com" is the domain name for this website.
Q) Do I need a domain name to have a website?
A) Technically no, but without one your visitors would need to know your websites "IP Address", which is essentially a 12-digit number. Domain names are much easier to remember.
Q) Can I use my company or trade name as my domain name?
A) Yes, provided the name isn't already registered to someone else.
Q) What can I do if someone else already has the domain name I want?
A) You can either register a different name, or try to purchase the name from the existing owner. Many online registrars have a lookup feature to find contact information of the current owner. Also, some online registrars allow you to go on a "waiting list" for the name - so that if/when the name expires, you may get the opportunity to register it then.
Q) How do I register my domain name?
A) Simply contact Vicorsys. We'll take care of all the details for you. There are also many online registrars, if you prefer to do it yourself.
Q) How long will I own my domain name?
A) From one to ten years, depending on your preference.

Q) What is "Website Hosting", and do I need it for my site?
A) Website Hosting is basically using the resources (disk space, bandwidth, etc.) of a Web Server in order to make your website available to the public over the Internet. Some companies host their own websites, while others use hosting services, such as Vicorsys, and rent the resources on a monthly, quarterly, or yearly basis. Every website must be hosted in order to be available on the Internet.

Q) How do I know which Hosting Plan is right for my website?
A) The best way is to contact Vicorsys and we'll help you pick the most appropriate plan for your site. To summarize though, The Starter plan is intended for sites without advanced features such as e-commerce, blogs, or discussion forums. The E-Biz and Enterprise plans are for e-commerce, or more sophisticated sites, and vary only in the number or amount of resources available.
Q) What kind of website traffic statistics are available with Hosting plans?
A) All hosting plans include access to three separate web traffic reporting engines. Here's a partial list of statistics available from one of those engines: Monthly summary, monthly history and daily summary showing unique visitors, number of visits, pages viewed, hits, and bandwidth used; Activity by days of the week; Activity by hours of the day; Visitors by country; Visitors by host; Authenticated users, Robots/spider visitors; Visit durations; Files viewed; Visitor operating systems; Visitor browser versions; Referring sites Referring search engines Search keywords; Search keyphrases; Added to favorites.
In addition, all hosting plans include access to the raw log files, for those interested in creating their own custom reports.

A) If you subscribe to any of Vicorsys maintenance plan, your site will be submitted to all the major search engines each quarter. All sites designed and hosted by us are submitted upon their initial publication to the Internet. It is also possible to submit your site manually by going to the search engine's website, and following the appropriate links.
Q) How can I improve my page ranking on Google and Yahoo?
A) Perhaps the two most important steps in improving your page ranking are; 1 - Get links to your site added to as many other sites as possible. Find online directories that list businesses in your industry, and get your site listed. Search Engines love inbound links. and 2 - Have your site content optimized by us. We have tools that will analyze your site and compare it to the top 10 sites listed for your keywords. We'll then update your content accordingly, and resubmit your site to the search engines.
Q) What is pay-per-click advertising? Does it work?
A) Pay-per-click is a popular method of website advertising, where you create small advertisements that are related to specific keywords. The ads are shown on search results pages, emails, and newsletters that are related to the keywords. When someone clicks on your ad, they are linked to your website. Under the right circumstances, this can be a very effective means of advertising your site, since you pay nothing until someone clicks on your ad. It also has the advantage of being extremely targeted - everyone who sees your ad is interested in the keywords you chose.

Q) Why does Vicorsys offer maintenance plans?
A) We believe that many small to mid-sized businesses would benefit from a stronger web presence, but simply lack the internal resources to manage the website internally. We also believe that most of these companies would make the effort to maintain a stronger web presence if it could be done economically, and with little or no disruption to their day-to-day business activities.
Q) How do the maintenance plans work?
A) You just select the number of prepaid hours per month you'd like to reserve (at a substantial discount off our standard rate), and then let us know of any adds, changes, or deletions needed on your website. We'll meet with you regularly to help plan the activities, and each quarter you'll receive a summary report showing the activities performed. You'll also receive a quarterly summary of website activity, and we'll also re-submit your website to the major search engines.
Q) Are major revisions included in the maintenance plans?
A) Any adds, changes, or deletions to your website can be included. However, if you have a major project in mind, it would probably be more cost-effective to handle the project under a separate fixed-price contract. Contact us for further information on this.
